Successfully Transitioning from the US Military to Civilian Life

I am a former Marine, and two-time combat veteran, who served two tours in Iraq. I was in the initial invasion in March 2003 attached to the 15th MEU. And I went back again in 2004! But, despite all that, the military was the best thing that ever happened to me. I gave my life to Christ in September of 2004 in Al Asad, Iraq, I met my wife in the military, and I have successfully transitioned from the US military to civilian life, living in Hawaii with my wife and two beautiful girls! God is good!

Starting a Home Business In The Military?

I first started bouncing the idea around in my head to start a home-based business about 3 1/2 years ago when I was still in the military. I thought, in theory, that it would be nice (when I transitioned out of the military) to be able to work from home and be with my growing family. However, I did not put as much effort into growing a successful business online as I should have.

The reason, in hindsight, is that I did not have the need, or a real purpose to build a business. My wife and I were both in the military, and we were both bringing home a lot of money each month, and we had one of our incomes going right into our savings account. Life was easy, and good. I was not looking very far down the road, like I should have been, since I was leaving the military soon. But, like my dad always told me, "In Hind-sight, you always see 20/20."

My Journey Towards Financial Prosperity and Freedom

I quickly discovered that making money online was not as quick, or as easy, as people were making it sound. With this new knowledge, I started bouncing around from opportunity to opportunity, in search of that ONE that would send me into the direction of financial prosperity, and freedom. Over the last few years, I have tried just about everything out there.

E-stores,
Building Websites,
Network Marketing (MLM).

I had little successes here-and-there over the last few years, but ultimately I had failed to achieve my goal of financial freedom. However, if there is one thing I have taken out of the Marine Corps, then it has to be to keep moving forward...never surrender. Basically, failure is not an option! This idea, and the strong desire to stay at home with my family has been the driving force of my ability to push through this "learning period".

What I Have Learned

I have learned that, in order, to build a successful and healthy, online business, you need four things:

Traffic
Sales
On-going Consumption
and Replication.

I will not go over the specific step-by-step process on how to do all this that I have learned at this time, but below is a brief overview.

Online, you do not have the luxury of posting a sign in front of your store on a busy road, and gain local traffic(business). Actually, if you don't market your online business, the chances of getting found online is virtually non-existent. So, first lesson:

But, it is not enough to have traffic come to your site. No...you have to gain the trust of your potential customer, and convince them to buy from you. Now, if you have effectively attracted customers to your business, and you have effectively pre-sold to your visitors, converting them to actual customers, then that is great. However, you do not become financially independent off of the sale from one customer. The real money comes from the on-going consumption of your products. This means that you need to continually follow-up with your customers to keep them coming back for more. Basically, you are building a relationship between yourself and your customers.

The aforementioned are essentials for conducting a successful business online, however, if you are in network marketing (MLM), then there is one more step.

You must have a business that others can replicate. In MLM, you build a business by recruiting others into your "down-line". But, your success only comes if your down-line is as successful as you. This means that you need to be able to show them the formula you use to attract customers, make the sale, and follow-up. You must not forget this step because the success, or failure, of your down-line directly affects your bottom-line. The better your down-line does in their business, the better you do in yours. So, help them out. Important Note: A strong customer-base is more important than a large down-line. Always concentrate on attracting more customers to your online business.

As you can see, building a successful business online is not as easy as it is made out to be. Actually, it is easy, it just takes a lot of work, time, and effort. You cannot expect to be a couch-potato, and reap the benefits of a healthy, successful business.

The Business I Wished I Found While I Was Still In The Military

The military definitely takes care of it's members! You do not have to worry about medical/dental, they advocate programs like the GI Bill and the Thrift Savings Plan, food and lodging is taken care of (if you are single). And even if your not, the military pays handsomely with COLA and BAH, so you are still taken care of.

When I was in the military, my wife and I had so much money coming in a month, it was ridiculous, especially when both of us had two tours overseas in a combat zone. And it was hard for me to see that when the guys came back from deployment, you would start to see $40,000-$50,0000 cars in the parking lot! That's nice for the short term, but I couldn't help but think "what a waste!" Cars in general are such a "money-pit", and they lose value as soon as you drive them off the lot. They are bad investments, nothing more than fun toys, that do not last! But, I digress.

My wife and I could not figure out what to do with all this money that we had acquired from all our deployments, so we decided to put it in a high interest savings account, and start earning interest. Later on, we ended up putting a large down-payment on a house, which is great, but I wish we did things a little differently now.

Just recently, I found a business opportunity that I wished I found while I was still earning a ton of money in the military. After all the failed attempts, I finally found a business that earns money, consistently every month, with as little effort as possible. Actually, when I saw this company's business model, I knew this was it. This was the business that would carry me into financial freedom.

Stop Trying To Build Your Business With The "Help" of Lead Generation Companies

I received an interesting phone call yesterday from a man who said that "I had signed-up to receive FREE information about a home-based business opportunity the week before." He said, "after reviewing your questionnaire that I filled out, I met the qualifications to join his opportunity." Now, obviously he was reading a script, but that is besides the point. There is nothing wrong with reading scripts, however, the problem was that what he was saying was not true!

I made the mistake a couple of years ago of filling-out an online form from some generic work-from-home lead generation site, and I have been getting random phone calls, like this one, ever since! Let me repeat that...I have not filled out an online form to get more information on a home-based business for a couple of years, and I am still getting phone calls. After I told him that I already owned and operated a home business, he started to sound frustrated, and even a bit angry. The conversation ended abruptly with him hanging up on me! I guess he was not getting the desired results from his "hot-off-the-press" leads. For all of you guys who buy leads out there, "Does this sound like your getting hot, fresh leads?" The chances are, you are probably not.

The truth of the matter is that a lot, and I dare say most, of the lead generation companies on the internet sell and resell "fresh leads" hundreds of times to many eager Business Affiliates looking to expand their business! This practice is appalling to say the least, but now you might understand the interesting responses you get from calling all of these "leads". Just think. If these leads were so "hot", "fresh", and "targeted", then they would not be so cheap. And you would think that for people who are supposedly interested in learning how to earn money from home that they would be a little more responsive to your phone call.

However, if you have ever bought, and called these leads, then you may have noticed that most shrug you off saying "I'm not interested in working from home", or say, "take me off of your list", or some actually get angry at you for calling them! Again this might be confusing, and even frustrating, if you did not know about the horrible business practices of these lead generation companies.

Educate yourself

Stop getting frustrated and educate yourself, so that you do not feel like you have to rely on these companies to build your business. In fact, set up your business so that you generate your own targeted leads! To start this process, I suggest you

Go to the library, or start purchasing books and magazines on marketing

I would start by reading "Small Business Marketing for Dummies".

I endorse this book first because I feel that it really nails how you should be thinking in order to market well. It
Clearly defines business marketing in an easy, concise manner. "Business Marketing is simply attracting customers and keeping them."
Shows, and explains marketing cycles
Supplies examples throughout the book that gives you great ideas on how you would want to market your business.
Basically, this book will give you a great start, and can be used as a reference to go back to, as you build your business successfully in the future.

Read and learn about Internet Marketing as well
Learn how to utilize the C-T-P-M business model to attract customers to you
Learn what KeyWords are and how to research and discover good keywords to focus your business on.
Discover different ways to build a business online, and how building a website would be advantageous for business growth.

While you do all your research, and educate yourself on how to successfully market and build a business online, I suggest you begin implementing the techniques you are learning by writing articles about issues and problems your business/products address. In doing so, make suggestions on how your business/products would be the solution for those problems.

If you are wondering where to start doing this, then here are some suggestions:

Write lenses on Squidoo, or other Content sharing sites
Write articles for places like, Article Marketer, or Idea Marketers
Start a blog on places like Blogger, or Wordpress.

First Steps To Personal Health and Wellness

What does this mean for you? That means that your life has extraordinary value, and your life has an explicit purpose! When you come to this realization, it is much easier to move forward, and set goals for yourself.

The final step before you start your journey to better your life is that you need to answer the question above in bold. Do you feel that your body is worth the time and effort it will take to improve your personal health and wellness?

I find it amusing when I hear people who are interested in earning money from home with a home-based business say, "I am open for anything besides sales. I don't want to do sales." If you find yourself one of those people that are saying this, then let me quickly explain something to you.

If you own a business, whether it is a traditional "brick and mortar" business, or a home business, then you are in sales! Whenever there is a transaction of money, there is a sale. So, unless you do not want to earn any money with your home business, you are going to have to sell something. Your sell does not have to necessarily come from "hard-goods". Hard goods are simply something you can go out to your local store and buy. You can also sell a service, or information as well. But, no matter how you look at it, if you want to make money from home, then you have to sell something.

A home business is not for everyone. A lot of people are not willing to put in the work required to make an online business successful. But, there are a few things one can do to make extra money without being in sales. The most obvious ones are to

Listening to your customers is a home business idea for the successful entrepreneur!

The key to understanding your potential customers is simple, but often overlooked... Listen to them. I'll say it again for emphasis...Listen To Them! For even more emphasis on how important this concept is, let me tell you a short story of a life-experience my wife and I had when trying to buy a car for our expanding family.

My wife and I decided we were going to start a family. So, that meant that we needed to buy a bigger car because our small, two-seater CRX was not going to cut adding a new addition to the family. Our needs seemed simple: Fuel efficient, Room for an expanding family, Good Safety Ratings.

We went to our local auto district and stopped by the Honda dealership first. We stopped there because I had owned a Honda in the past and liked it, and their cars had a great reputation. However, the salesman were not very helpful. We said we were wanting to gather some information about some vehicles they had in their inventory, and they more or less seemed annoyed that we were not there to buy anything. In fact, instead of "wasting their time", they decided to ignore us by saying they didn't have what we were looking for! We were shocked, but I decided right there that we were not purchasing anything from them. Why? Because they wanted to be rude, elitists instead of listen to our need.

Disgusted, we drove off to the Nissan dealership, where the salesman was just as bad. This guy "pretended" to listen to what are needs were and in the process missed the whole concept that we were there only for information, not to buy. He went straight for that hardsale by saying, "what price do you need this car to be for you to walk out that door with it?" I told him that we were not ready to buy, but I guess he was just "pretending" to listen again. He was practically blocking the exits trying to sell us on a car by that time I didn't even want!

Finally, we were able to "escape" from that horribly pushy salesman, and headed to the Toyota dealership. By this time, my wife and I were not to confident we were going to even get what we came out for...Information! After that last encounter, we cautiously walked into the dealership and we were confronted with a friendly man with a big smile on his face. He came up shook our hands, told us his name, and asked us how he could help us.

We told him our needs, he quietly listened, and when we were done with our, by now, rehearsed speech he started to show us around. We did not know much about Toyota's, so we asked lot of questions, and he patiently answered all of them. We even test drove a few of the vehicles. Overall, we probably spent a good 45 minutes to an hour with this one salesman, which was about 12% of his total work day! We did not drive off with a new vehicle that day, but we left there with good information and a pleasant, memorable experience with the salesman. He may not have got a sale that day from all the time he invested with us, but a couple of weeks later we did go back, we did seek him out, and we did purchase a car with him. He even remembered our names! Now that is a good listener!

Once you start listening to your target market, success will be easy. Or, at least easier! There are many easy things you can do with your online home business to better understand your target market. To name a few:

Give your customers the opportunity to fill out a survey of their experience doing business with you.
Write articles and enable interested customers/prospects to fill out a simple web form to receive a newsletter from you.

In the form, gather information like age, sex, location. Learn the demographics of your interested customers/prospects, so you can target and attract more people like them.

Start a forum discussion
Track where your online visitors are coming from, and track your marketing campaigns to see what is effective, and what is not.

And most importantly, do not be like the elitist Honda Salesmen, or the "pushy" Nissan Salesman. Be like the Toyota Salesman by listening to the needs of your target market, understand their problems, and be helpful by providing potential solutions for the problems.
